Understanding Radiant Heating Technology

How Does a Creative Radiator Work? The Science Behind Radiant Heating, Creative Radiators combine electric heating technology, thermal storage and radiant heat transfer in a bespoke designer heating panel that is designed to provide comfortable, controllable and highly responsive warmth.

Unlike a conventional wet central-heating radiator, or storage heaters which heats a room primarily by circulating warm air through convection, Creative Radiators are designed to transfer a significant proportion of their heat directly from the heated surface to people and surrounding surfaces.

The result is a different type of heating experience: gentle, even radiant warmth combined with intelligent temperature control and a exclusive decorative architectural finish.

What is radiant heating?

Radiant heating is a natural method of transferring thermal energy. Think about standing outside in sunshine on a cool day. You can feel the warmth of the sun directly on your skin even though the surrounding air may still be cold.

Creative Radiators use a similar principle, when the radiator’s internal electrical heating system is activated, heat is transferred into the radiator’s thermal body. The warmed surface then emits infrared radiant energy into the room. This energy travels directly to surrounding objects and surfaces, which absorb the heat and gradually release it back into the environment. Instead of relying primarily on hot air circulating around the room, radiant heating creates warmth directly at the surfaces and occupants within the space.

How does a Creative Radiator produce heat?

The Radiant Heating technology combines several components that work together:

1. Electrical heating element
Each radiator incorporates a high-quality electrical heating element designed to respond quickly when heat is required. When the thermostat calls for heat, electrical energy is converted into thermal energy and transferred into the radiator’s heating system. The initial heating phase allows the radiator to reach its operating temperature quickly.

2. High‑density thermal mass
The radiator’s specially engineered marble body acts as a high‑density thermal mass, absorbing heat rapidly and retaining it for long periods. Once warmed, the marble continues to radiate a steady, even warmth back into the room, reducing temperature fluctuations and improving overall energy efficiency. This natural heat‑storage capability allows the radiator to maintain comfort using less power, while delivering a smooth, consistent radiant heat that feels both natural and luxurious. This creates a heat-storage and heat-release effect rather than simply switching an exposed electrical element on and off. Once the radiator has reached the required set-point temperature, the electronic control system reduces the amount of electrical energy required to maintain the desired room temperature.

3. Radiant heating surface
The large heated surface becomes the emitter, rather than producing warmth from a small concentrated heating element, the patented technology distributes heat across the entire radiator’s surface. This allows radiant energy to be transferred gently and progressively into the room. The result is an even distributed heating effect designed to minimise hot and cold areas and provide a comfortable ambient temperature.

Radiant heat versus conventional convection heating

One of the most important differences between Creative Radiators and conventional heating is how heat is transferred around the room. Traditional convection heating warms air close to the radiator. The warm air rises, cooler air moves down towards the radiator and the process creates continuous air circulation. Radiant heating works differently, the heated surface emits radiant energy directly into the surrounding environment. People, furniture, floors and walls absorb this energy, helping create a more uniform thermal environment. This can provide a particularly comfortable form of heating because the warmth is not dependent entirely on heating the air first.

Why does the radiator continue to feel warm after the element stops heating?

This is an important feature of the thermal design, the radiator’s thermal body absorbs heat while the electrical element is operating. Once the required temperature has been reached, the thermostat can reduce or stop active heating.

The stored thermal energy can then continue to be released gradually from the radiator surface. This is sometimes described as a thermal inertia or stone-effect principle: the material absorbs heat and then releases it progressively rather than losing all of its heat immediately when electrical input stops. Temperature sensors help monitor the radiator and regulate the heating cycle.

Intelligent temperature control, Heating only where and when it is needed

Radiant heating becomes particularly useful when combined with accurate electronic temperature control, each Creative Radiator can be controlled independently, allowing different rooms to operate according to their individual requirements. Zone heating controls benefits.

For example:

  • Living room: comfortable temperature 21 degrees during the evening
  • Bedroom: lower temperature 18 degrees overnight
  • Spare room: reduced temperature 15 degrees when unoccupied
  • Bathroom: heating programmed around morning and evening use

This approach avoids treating the entire property as one heating zone. Instead, heating can be matched to how each room is actually used, a fully-zoned heating control system.

Can Creative Radiators replace storage heaters?

Yes. Creative Radiators are particularly suited to properties where traditional storage heaters are being replaced. However, they are fundamentally different from conventional brick-filled storage heaters. Traditional storage heaters generally charge themselves during designated off-peak periods and release their stored heat later. The Advantages of Electric Radiators.

Creative Radiators do not need to be “charged” overnight with Economy 7 tariff, before they can provide useful heat. They can provide heat when it is required and can be controlled individually according to room temperature, occupancy and lifestyle. This makes them suitable for properties where occupants want greater control over their heating.
